Talking about puberty is an important time for every young girl. Puberty brings on a ton of changes, so you probably have more than a few questions about what's going on. Luckily, there are plenty of people you can talk to about it.

Talking to Adults

It may be tempting to ask your friends about puberty, but if you don’t know, there’s a pretty good chance your friends won’t either (or if they say they do, they may have the wrong info).

It’s for the best that the first person you talk to is an adult you trust. It’ll make it easier to ask personal questions, and you’ll know that you’re getting the right answers.

If talking about your body is limited to what to eat and brushing your teeth, it might just feel impossible to bring it up. That’s OK!

It’s perfectly natural to feel awkward and embarrassed, but don't let that stop you from talking to someone. Asking questions that you just need to know the answer to or talking about how you feel (no matter what emotion) is a huge relief.

It Doesn’t Always Have to Be Your Mom

If you feel more comfortable talking to an older sister, go for it. She’s probably been through what you’re going through, too. Have a young aunt you’re close to? How about a friend’s mom you feel totally comfortable around? Some girls talk to a teacher, a school nurse or their doctor, and that’s perfectly fine too. As long as you talk with someone you know has experience, you should be just fine.

Timing is Everything

Once you decide who you want to talk to, you'll want to choose the right time. If you want to ask your mom, wait for a time when she isn't busy doing other things.

If she seems to be busy all the time, you might just want to say, "Mom, there's something I'd like to talk to you about when you have time." She’ll know it’s serious enough that you’re bringing it up to her, and she’ll make some time for you.

Although you know how to talk to the people in your life, writing your questions down before you have the conversation is a good idea. That way, you won't forget to ask something.

No matter how you do it, both of you will probably be glad you talked.
