Explaining puberty to your daughter can be a beautiful moment. However, when girls start puberty, mother and daughter relationships can get tricky. Yourdaughter may start to feel too shy or embarrassed to talk about topics like her first period — even if she’s desperate to share her feelings or askquestions. It's important to let your daughter know that you're always available to chat.

Here are some ways you can create opportunities that help get an open, comfortable dialogue going. Just choose one of the notes below that sounds most likeyou. Write it down and sign it, then give it to your daughter (or leave it where only she'll be able to find it).

Dear Daughter,

I know talking about it can be embarrassing, but I don’t want your period to be surrounded by question marks. If you have any questions about sanitary padsor about anything at all, just let me know. I’ll always be here for you anytime you need to talk.

Love Always,Mom

Dear Daughter,

I feel like we can talk about anything together. Now that you’re growing up, it’s time to start talking about puberty. Puberty’s an awkward word, isn’t it?It can also be an awkward time. But I want you to know that no matter how awkward it gets, I’m always here for you.

Love Always,Mom

Dear Daughter,

Now that you’re growing up, you may not want me around all the time. But I want you to know I’ll always be here for you whenever you need to talk aboutperiods, pads or anything at all.

Love Always,Mom
