How to Talk to Your Mom About Your First Period

Talking about puberty is a great time for you to bond and learn a lot about becoming a woman. It’s completely natural to be nervous about talking to your mom about your first period. It’s a pretty big deal, after all. Just know this: It's really not so bad once you get the conversation started.

If you just can’t seem to say something, use these three tips.

  1. number 1Keep it Casual

It could just be the idea of a big sit-down talk that’s intimidating. If that’s the case, try opening the conversation by saying something super casual like, "Mom, when you were younger, were you nervous about getting your period?" She’ll probably get the hint.

  2. number 2Write it Down

If it's hard for you to start a discussion in person, leave your mom a note where only she'd find it (in one of her dresser drawers or her purse maybe). When she finds it, she'll find the time to start a conversation with you (and you won't have to worry about bringing it up).

  3. number 3Be Direct

Really though, you could just take the most direct approach and just tell her your feelings!

Really though, you could just take the most direct approach and just tell her your feelings! Take a deep breath, walk up to her and say something like, "This is really embarrassing, but I need to talk to you about my first period." She might be surprised, but your mom can get to the point right away — and she’ll probably do her best to make the conversation as painless as possible.
